This year, my grade went tree planting for community service and I am proud to say that we planted over 30 trees! We went to plant more trees in order to make extra shade for the park. My group (above) planted a tree named Roberta Hornbeam because she is a Hornbeam tree! Since we went to Hillside Park to plant all these trees, I wanted to learn about it, and I found some super cool information!
Hillside Park is super old and in 1922 Hillside Park School was built there! This was super cool because it was the first high school in the area to allow black students to attend! Also in 1922 there was a club on the other side of the park called the Algonquin Club! The Algonquin Club was a great community for black residents in the area. Not only did the Algonquin Club host tennis matches and tournaments for black athletes across the nation, but it was also a great meeting place. When 1964 rolled around, the Algonquin Club had been broken up and had turned into a similar building as the W.D. Hill Recreation Center which has sadly burned down as of 1968. This Park has so much cool information and I wish I knew more!
Planting trees was SO much more fun than I ever thought it could have been! I totally recommend planting a tree; whether it is in your backyard or at a local park, you will not only have so much fun, but you will also have the satisfaction of helping your community by planting more trees.
Have you ever planted a tree before? If so, how did you like it? And if you haven’t planted one, do you want to plant a tree now? Comment on this blog to tell me!
